Moluccana Provenance Nursery is part of Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural and Education Centre, an indigenous, not for profit business based at Penrith Lakes in Cranbrook near the venue for the Sydney Olympics 2000 rowing and canoeing events.
Habitat for flora and fauna has slowly decreased ever since the arrival of the first fleet. With the increasing demand for land for housing, habitat is now under more pressure than ever with many species now listed as threatened or endangered under NSW and Commonwealth legislation.
So what can you do to help? If you are a gardener in the Penrith or Hawkesbury region you may like to consider using plants native to our local area. With the right mix of plants you can have a garden that has flowers all year round, attracts birds, uses little water and requires minimal maintenance. You can also be proud of the fact that you are doing your bit to help conserve the local environment.
Muru Mittigar provenance nursery propagates vegetation in the form of trees, shrubs, climbers, grasses and ground covers from the Penrith Area of the Cumberland Plains. These plants are for sale to both commercial customers and the general public. The emphasis is to ensure that the original local species are used in rehabilitation projects, council plantings, parklands and increasingly in home gardens, to preserve the gene pool of the local native plants.
The majority of the plants produced are utilised specifically for the rehabilitation and restoration projects within the working quarry at Penrith Lakes and by rehabilitation works throughout Western Sydney.
Muru Mittigar Ltd endeavours to employ and train local indigenous people. Staff training is integral to the success of the Muru Mittigar Ltd with all staff gaining expertise in seed collection, propagation, bush regeneration, and traditional plant usage.
Achieving Nursery and Garden Industry Australia (NGIA) accreditation under theNursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) in 2002 was the catalyst to changing the business focus. It is the only accredited Aboriginal run nursery in NSW. NIASA has given the business credibility with some of their new and larger customers and assisted in driving continual improvements in staff knowledge, nursery hygiene, crop production systems and site management.
